Dominic's memory training began in 1987 when he saw Creighton Carvello memorize a pack of 52 playing cards in under three minutes and then recall them in sequence on Record Breakers (a UK TV program). He then sat down with a deck of cards and developed a technique to memorize them in order. Dominic O' Brien's technique or strategy is very similar to the method of loci. Dominic places a character representing a card (James bond representing the 7 of spades) along a familiar walk (a walk to the grocery store) which has 52 familiar landmarks. Dominic explains that dedication is an important quality of a mnemonist. Dominic has said, "I'm always working at it's just like a golfer trying to perfect his swing".
